Coaches vs. Cancer event puts focus on finding cure

Any time someone mentions the dreaded word, the reaction is usually along the lines of "oh, no that's a real hame."
While the odds are usually high in beating cancer, any survivor knows there is always hope.
And provide hope is what the ninth annual Coaches vs. Cancer Celebrity Golf Tournament, being held May 20 at the Penn State Golf Courses, wants to do in its fight against cancer.
Cancer is the one disease that everyone can relate to, either having a family member or friend be afflicted by this dreaded disease. No one is immune to the devastating aftermath when learning of a loved one being diagnosed with the disease.
"Patients and their loved ones face many uncertainties when dealing with cancer," said tournament director Steve Greer. "It is natural for anyone facing cancer to be concerned about what the future holds. Understanding the nature of cancer and what to expect can help patients and their loved ones plan treatment, anticipate lifestyle changes, and make quality of life and financial decisions."
That's where the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament comes in. The committee is trying to help eliminate the disease from our vocabulary sooner rather than later. While it make take years, the fight will continue and will be won.
"My wife, Kim, and I have been personally touched by cancer," said Penn State men's basketball coach Ed DeChellis. "We are honored and excited to be associated with this great organization and its cause. We are so proud of the overall success of our Coaches vs. Cancer golf event and the contribution it is making in the community. This event couldn't happen without our committed sponsors, numerous volunteers, committee members, and strong community support."
With help from its new lead sponsor, Sheetz, the Coaches vs. Cancer committee is expecting 60 groups to tee off -- fivesomes will include a celebrity golfer -- in the largest tournament in the nine-year history of the event. Among the celebrities expected to participate are Skip Prosser (Wake Forest head basketball coach) and former Penn State basketball players Calvin Booth, Dan Earl, Ed Fogell, Titus Ivory, Tom Hovasse and Jarrett Stephens. Other former Penn State athletes expected to attend are John Greene, Tim Curley, Fran Ganter, Franco Harris, Pete Liske, Dennis Onkotz, Richie Lucas and D.J. Dozier.
More than $300,000 has been raised for the American Cancer Society from the tournament in the first eight years. More than $500,000 from the Penn State Coaches vs. Cancer chapter, which includes the student groups fund raising, donations and other events.
The event held at Penn State was ranked eighth in the nation among Coaches vs. Cancer tournaments last year for funds raised. Funds go to ACS, of which a majority stay in Centre County.
There are still a few spots available for individual golfers for $375 or to register as a team the cost is $1,500. The cost covers a sponsor-celebrity reception, awards banquet, golf, greens fees, breakfast, golf shirt and tee prizes. Tournament registration is from 8 to 9:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. A celebrity/sponsor reception will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. May 19 in the Penn State Hintz Family Alumni Center.
A silent auction is planned as part of the event's closing banquet at The Penn Stater Conference Center on May 20. The auction will feature a variety of items, such as U.S. Open golf passes, autographed sports memorabilia and vacation packages. The complete list of auction items can be found on the event's Web site at www.CVCPennState.org.
For information about the auction, call Lea Asbell-Swanger or Terry Swanger at 466-6938. For more information about the reception and banquet, call 865-1717 by Friday.
